Block One is Live on LIRR Expansion Project

The third track allows the LIRR to run more trains and recover from delays during the rush hour commute.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul joined Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) officials for a ceremonial first ride and press conference marking the opening of the first section of LIRR Expansion Project.

“The opening of the Third Track marks a huge milestone for commuters and visitors that is decades in the making,” Hochul said at the Monday press conference. “Thanks to this extraordinary project, LIRR trains will run more often, and passengers will have a smoother ride than ever.”

MTA Chairman and CEO Janno Lieber said this Third Track project is different from other mega projects in the past. It’s more than $100 million under budget and ahead of schedule, for which he gave thanks to MTA Construction & Development and the LIRR team as well as design-build team 3rd Track Constructors, a joint venture between John Picone, Dragados, �ֲ��ý Civil and Halmar International.

MTA Construction & Development President Jamie Torres-Springer added, “Commissioning the first block of the LIRR Third Track is a major milestone as we deliver this transformative project on time and under budget for Long Islanders. This project is our model going forward as we deliver great benefits for our customers better, faster and cheaper.”

The three-mile section of the 9.8-mile expansion project is just the beginning, and there are two more blocks to be commissioned and cut over within the next two months. Once achieved, it will have the potential to boost train capacity by 50 percent for Long Islanders, according to MTA officials.

Arlo Hotel Celebrates Groundbreaking in DC

�ֲ��ý Chairman and President Ning Yuan joined members of the development, construction and design team for the groundbreaking ceremony.

This unique project involves the restoration and preservation of DC’s oldest known surviving conventional apartment building — The Harrison apartments built in 1882 — and the construction of a 12-story structure to accommodate a 445-key hotel in the heart of northwest DC. When complete, The Arlo DC Hotel will mix two eras and feature guest rooms and suites, a restaurant and bar, an interior courtyard, a fitness center, neighborhood bodega and a rooftop lounge and pool.

11 Hoyt Wins ACEC 2022 Engineering Excellence Award

The Hoyt Street project in downtown Brooklyn consists of a residential tower above a two-story podium. The ground floor features retail space, the residential lobby and porte-cochere. The basement of the existing building was re-used.

Plaza worked with Triton Construction on the demolition of the original building and construction of the core and shell for a 51-story, 730,000-square-foot tower with 490 residences. The building rises 620 feet above the street. The project required careful planning so as not to disrupt the service for the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) subway lines running beneath Fulton Street on the north side of the site. The building’s exterior is like a sculpture, with the elements migrating across its facade. More than 190 unique floor plans accommodate a diverse mix of residents. Built of precast concrete, the scalloped facade units were prefabricated and installed on-site.

The pre-existing building housed a mixture of parking, storage and ground-floor retail spaces. The new structure is primarily cast-in-place concrete with a structural steel-framed roof. The plan called for retaining the existing structure below grade, including the ground-floor slabs east and west of the tower. The superstructure tower section consists of reinforced cast-in-place concrete and contains flat plate floor slabs.

This year will commemorate the 20th anniversary of this devastating event.
