乐播传媒 Civil, along with its joint-venture partners on the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Expansion project, successfully moved multiple rail crossings below grade and put each new underpass in place with only a weekend shutdown though weeks of service disruptions were anticipated.
The team is using Italian engineering firm Petrucco鈥檚 box-jacking system which uses hydraulic jacks and spreaders to move the cast-in-place concrete box carrying the entire underpass and rail bridge into place in a matter of hours with limited disruption to railway traffic, according to Engineering News-Record (ENR). By innovatively adopting this method for the first time on six grade-crossing eliminations in the United States, the project team was ahead of schedule. 鈥淚t’s a huge leap forward from how LIRR traditionally does grade-crossing eliminations,鈥 according to Anthony Tufano, executive director of the mainline expansion project for LIRR.
As one of the busiest commuter lines, LIRR has 126 stops crossing Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn and Long Island, providing transportation to the entire metropolitan area in various capacities. Phillip Eng, president of the LIRR told ENR: “I don鈥檛 know if you can find another commuter railroad that has this many grade crossings in such a short geographical footprint. I would absolutely recommend [the box-jacking method] to others. If it works for LIRR, it鈥檚 going to work for other railroads across America.”
